Bandgeschichte
Das Trio formierte sich in Olympia, Washington und lebt jetzt in Portland. Die Band wurde unter anderem als Opener für Sleater-Kinney und Le Tigre bekannt. Ihren großen Erfolg erlangten sie aber mit dem Titelsong zum dritten Album Standing In The Way Of Control. Dieser Song, der gegen die homosexuellenfeindlichen Ideen von George W. Bush wetterte, brachte The Gossip hohe Chartsplatzierungen in den UK ein und wurde zu einem Klassiker des Indie Rock.
Die lesbische Sängerin Beth Ditto, die sich selber stolz als "fett" bezeichnet, erregte weiterhin mediales Aufsehen als sie sich für die Titelseiten der britischen Zeitschriften NME und LOVE nackt ablichten ließ. Durch ihre hohe Präsenz in den Medien und durch den Wechsel zum Major-Label Columbia für ihr viertes Album Music For Men haben The Gossip gewissermaßen den Sprung in den Mainstream vollzogen.

- Obwohl auf den meisten Veröffentlichungen der Band lediglich der Name Gossip steht, werden sie meist als The Gossip bezeichnet.
- Das Modelabel Louis Vuitton hat speziell für Beth Ditto einige Kleidungsstücke designt und angefertigt.
- Schlagzeugerin Hannah Blilie sowie Sängerin Beth Dittos, deren Lebenspartner eine Transvestitin ist, sind lesbisch. Gitarrist Brace Paine ist heterosexuell.
