Zum Album

This Is Hardcore ist das sechste und vorletzte Studioalbum der britischen Band Pulp. Es wurde mit Produzent Chris Thomas aufgenommen, der schon an Different Class beteiligt war. Die Aufnahmen begannen 1997 fanden in The Town House und den Olympic Studios in London statt. Kurz vor Beginn der Aufnahmen verließ Russell Senior die Band und wurde durch Mark Webber ersetzt.

Das Album brachte einen deutlichen Wandel der Band zum Ausdruck. Im Gegensatz zu den poppigen Hits des Vorgängers wurde hier der Absturz in die Tiefen des Stardaseins beschrieben. Der gesamte Ton des Albums ist, bis auf wenige Ausnahmen, sehr düster und illustriert die Enttäuschung über den Alptraum, der sich statt der Erfüllung eines Traums, abspielt. In vielen Liedern werden der glamouröse Lebensstil, das Party- und pornhohafte Sexleben des Celebritydaseins beschrieben und dabei ironisch und zynisch kommentiert. Gleichzeitig werden psychische Probleme, Phobien und Depressionen in den Vordergrund gerückt. Besonders deutlich wird das im ersten Song The Fear mit Zeilen wie "The sound of loneliness turned up to ten / ... / The end is near again / ... / And here comes another panic attack", einem Titel wie Party Hard oder dem ironisch betitelten Glory Days, in dem es heißt: "My face is unappealing and my thoughts are unoriginal / I did experiments with substances / But all it did was make me ill". Die letzten Worte des Albums im Song The Day After the Revolution lauten u.a.: "The hangover is over / Men are over / Women are over / Cholesterol is over / ... / Irony is over / Bye bye."

Cocker selbst beschreibt die Entstehung und die Hintergründe des Albums im Booklet der Deluxe Edition mit folgenden Worten: "I decided that what I needed was a rest cure – in New York – just before Christmas – on my own. This bright idea led to me having some kind of nervous breakdown in the Paramount Hotel just off Times Square and I returned to the UK a mental and physical wreck. Then Russell left the band. Thus, the band that started recording 'This Is Hardcore' in 1997 was, to say the least, in 'a bit of a state'. It's strange how people in bands chase success cos they think it will give them self-confidence, only to find that it takes what confidence they had away. [...] We had our Pop Moment and this was our evocation of the aftermath. That we didn't flinch from doing that makes me proud. And if I was mentally enfeebled during the making of the record then the rest of the band made up for it by raising their game considerably. In the end 'This Is Hardcore' may be the sound of failure – but it's the most successful rendition of the sound of failure ever put to tape. So there."[1]

Das Cover, das vom amerikanischen Künstler John Currin [1] designt wurde, sorgte für Kontroversen, weil einige Werbeplakate, die in der Londoner U-Bahn aufgehängt waren und das Cover zeigten, mit Graffiti verunstaltet wurden, die es als frauenverachtend und sexistisch bezeichneten.[2] Jarvis Cocker war 1996 auf Currin gestoßen und bat ihn um Mithilfe bei der Gestaltung des Covers.[3]

Das Album war kommerziell erfolgreich, denn es brachte der Band die zweite Nr.1-Platzierung in England ein, Help the Aged schaffte es auch als Single in die Top 10, insgesamt war es jedoch nicht der Riesenhit, der Different Class gewesen war, was wohl auch an der Verunsicherung vieler Fans lag. Die Kritiker schätzten das Album trotz/wegen seines Stilbruchs in eine düsterere Richtung. Bei Allmusic nannte man es "artistic triumph"[4], beim Rolling Stone stellte man fest: "Desperation never sounded quite so entertaining"[5] und Jan Wigger bezeichnete den Titel-Track als "besten Pulp-Song aller Zeiten."[6]
