Ill Communication ist das vierte Album der Beastie Boys.
Mit Sabotage ist auf diesem Album einer der bekanntesten Songs der Band vertreten, was auch aus dem Video resultiert, worin sich die verkleideten Bandmitglieder in einer Krimiserienparodie aus den 1970ern einige Verfolgungsjagden liefern (wie z.B.: Starsky & Hutch [1]).
Musikalisch geht die Band den Weg des Vorgängeralbums weiter. Ill Communication enthält Punksongs, sowie melodische Instrumentals und wurde wieder größtenteils im Studio (Kalifornien und New York) eingespielt.

Titel
In dem Song Sure Shot heisst es: Like Ma Bell, I've got the ill communications, wobei Ma Bell ein Spitzname der US-amerikanischen Telekommunikationsfirma "Bell System" war. Diese hatte lange Zeit ein weitgehendes Monopol im dortigen Telefonmarkt und war bekannt für ihre technischen Schwierigkeiten, die zu eben diesen "Ill Communications" führten.
