Bandgeschichte

American Football wurde gegründet von Mike Kinsella, der vorher bei Cap'n Jazz und Joan Of Arc war und anschließend bei Owls und Owen spielte, Drummer Steve Lamos, vorher bei The One Up Downstairs und anschließend bei The Geese, und Steve Holmes, der jetzt auch bei The Geese spielt.

Kinsella und Lamos spielten zunächst zusammen mit den Brüdern David Johnson und Allen Johnson unter dem Namen The One Up Downstairs. Aber die Band löste sich bald auf. David und Allen Johnson gingen zu Very Secretary und später zu Favorite Saints, während Kinsella and Lamos zusammen mit Steve Holmes American Football gründeten.

American Football veröffentlichte 1998 eine EP und im darauf folgenden Jahr einen Longplayer. Die Band hatte einige Live-Auftritte. Ihr letzter Auftritt fand im Mai 1999 in der Fireside Bowl in Chicago statt. Bevor ihre LP herauskam, die nach wie vor große Anerkennung findet, hatte sich die Band schon getrennt.

Trivia

• Mike Kinsella erklärt den Namen der Band folgendermaßen: My girlfriend had been in Dublin, Ireland, visiting her family. One of the things she brought home for me was a flyer for a Chicago Bears exhibition game that said: "Come see American Football, featuring the most overpaid athletes in the world." Something about that statement made me think of rock bands, most of whom are overpaid musicians in the world. When I suggested it as a name, the other guys thought it was dumb. Still, for whatever reason, we kept it.
