Biographie

Elvis Costello wird 1954 als Declan Patrick McManus geboren und ist der Sohn eines Musikers. Er arbeitet zunächst als Informatiker und tritt schon Anfang der 70er solo in Clubs auf. 1976 spielt er mit der Band Flip City, nimmt dabei erste Demos auf, die ihm einen Vertrag bei Stiff einbringen. Dort erscheint dann 1977 sein Debütalbum My Aim Is True unter dem Künstlernamen Elvis Costello (der sich aus Elvis Presley und dem Mädchennamen von Costellos Mutter zusammensetzt). Als Backing-Band entstehen dabei auch The Attractions, die ihn fortan auf einem Großteil seiner Auftritte und Alben begleiten. Ein Jahr später erscheint das zweite Album This Year's Model, das erfolgreicher als der Vorgänger ist, ebenso wie der Nachfolger Armed Forces, der in der UK und den USA ein Top-10-Hit wird.

Costello beginnt auf seinen regelmäßig erscheinenden Alben mit verschiedenen Musikstilen zu spielen, Get Happy!! (1980) ist vom Soul geprägt, auf Almost Blue (1981) covert er Country-Songs, Imperial Bedroom (1982) ist stark am Pop orientiert. Bei Punch the Clock arbeitet er mit den sehr erfolgreichen Produzenten Clive Langer und Alan Winstanley zusammen und das Album wird eines der erfolgreichsten für Costello. Der Nachfolger Goodbye Cruel World floppt, danach geht er auf Tour und produziert das zweite Album der Pogues, dafür erscheinen 1986 gleich zwei Alben, King of America und Blood and Chocolate, auf dem er für eine Weile das letzte Mal mit den Attractions zusammenarbeitet.

1987 wechselt er zu Warner Bros., arbeitet mit Paul McCartney zusammen und veröffentlicht Spike, auf dem der mit McCartney geschriebene Song Veronica enthalten ist, Costellos erfolgreichste Single in den USA. 1989 erscheint Mighty Like a Rose und 1993 arbeitet er mit The Brodsky Quartet zusammen an dem Album The Juliet Letters. Mit den Attractions entsteht 1994 Brutal Youth, 1995 die Cover-Compilation Kojak Variety, 1996 All This Useless Beauty mit Songs, die er für andere Künstler geschrieben hatte und 1998 Painted From Memory zusammen mit Burt Bacharach. 2001 werden alle seine ersten Alben mit Bonus-CDs wiederveröffentlicht, er unterrichtet an der UCLA, tritt in Filmen auf und veröffentlicht 2002 When I Was Cruel zusammen mit Mitgliedern der Attractions, die nun The Imposters heißen.

2003 erscheint North, er arbeitet mit seiner Frau Diana Krall an ihrem Album und veröffentlicht das Klassik-Album Il Sogno und das Konzept-Album The Delivery Man mit den Imposters. 2006 erscheint die Live-Orchester-Kollaboration My Flame Burns Blue und zusammen mit Allen Toussaint The River In Reverse.
