Cat Power ist der Künstlername der US-amerikanischen Singer/Songwriterin Charlyn 'Chan' Marshall. Sie tritt mit häufig wechselnden Begleitmusikern auf, unter anderem auch Größen wie Steve Shelley und Dave Grohl.

Biographie
Cat Power ist die Tochter einer Blues-Musikers und Pianisten. Ihre Kindheit ist aufgrund der Scheidung ihrer Eltern von zahllosen Umzügen geprägt. Die Highschool verlässt sie ohne Abschluss. Erste musikalische Erfahrungen sammelt die Sängerin in Atlanta, als sie neben befreundeten Musikern und Bands auf der Bühne steht. Lange Jahre sind ihre Auftritte vom Drogenkonsum beeinflusst, der diese mitunter stark beeinträchtigt.
1992 zieht Marshall nach New York und trifft dort auf eine ausgeprägte Free-Jazz und avantgardistische Musikszene. Es folgen weitere Auftritte, die zunächst jedoch stark improvisiert und wenig professionell sind. Sie wird Vorband für God Is My Co-Pilot, mit denen sie 1994 die Single "Headlights" aufnimmt. Im selben Jahr tritt sie auf einem Konzert von Liz Phair auf, was ihr die Aufmerksamkeit von Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) einbringt, der auf ihrem Debütalbum Dear Sir und der Folgeplatte Myra Lee, beide eingespielt im Dezember 1994 in New York, als Gitarrist auftritt.
Dem Plattenvertrag mit Matador folgt 1996 das Album What Would the Community Think und die daraus entnommene Single "Nude as the News". Nach einer dreimonatigen Tour mit Guv'ner zum Release des Albums distanziert sich die Sängerin jedoch zunächst von der Musikszene. 1998 meldet sie sich mit der LP Moon Pix jedoch zurück, das von der Kritik gelobt wird. 2000 wird The Covers Record, eine Sammlung verschiedener Cover-Tracks veröffentlicht.
Das 2003er Album You Are Free wird schließlich der erste größere kommerzielle Erfolg der Singer/Songwrierin. Auch die Kritik zeigt sich weitgehend begeistert. 2005 tourt Cat Power weltweit, unter anderem mit Nick Cave. Viele der auf der Tour gespielten Songs sollen später auf The Greatest veröffentlicht werden, dass 2006 erscheint und von der Kritik frenetisch gefeiert wird. Zwei Tracks daraus, "Living Proof" und "The Greatest" werden 2007 in Wong Kar Wais Spielfilm "My Blueberry Nights" verwendet, in dem Marshall außerdem in ihrem Leinwanddebüt die Rolle der Katya übernimmt.
2008 präsentiert die Musikerin mit Jukebox bereits das zweite Album, das vor allem aus Coverversionen besteht. Die im Dezember desselben Jahres erschienene Dark End of the Street EP enthält sechs Songs, die es nicht auf das Album geschafft haben.
