Bandgeschichte
1976 gründen Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding und Terry Chambers die Band Star Park, nennen sich dann Helium Kidz, Barry Andrews kommt am Keyboard dazu und nach einer Abfuhr von CBS Records nennen sie sich schließlich XTC. Sie bekommen einen Vertrag bei Virgin und nach einer EP erscheint das Debütalbum White Music. Es schafft es in die Top 40, die Singles sind jedoch wenig erfolgreich. Nach einer US-Tour steigt Barry Andrews aus und David Gregory kommt zur Band dazu. Life Begins At The Hop wird die erste erfolgreiche Single und das dritte Album Drums And Wires erreicht ebenfalls wieder die Top 40. Das 1980 erschienene Album Black Sea wird das bis dato erfolgreichste in den USA. Der Nachfolger English Settlement schafft es sogar in die UK-Top 10, ebenso wie die Single Senses Working Overtime. 1982 bricht Partridge mehrmals vor Erschöpfung auf der Bühne zusammen, woraufhin die Band ankündigt nicht mehr live aufzutreten. Gleichzeitig verlässt Terry Chambers die Gruppe. Die Weigerung für das nächste Album Mummer auf Tour zu gehen, führt zu Ärger mit der Plattenfirma. Im Laufe der nächsten Jahre folgen weitere Alben, teilweise unter dem Namen The Dukes Of Stratosphear, die Kritiken sind meistens gut, der kommerzielle Erfolg bleibt jedoch größtenteils aus. Dann ist es aufgrund Vertragsstreitigkeiten und gruppeninterner Differenzen lange ruhig um die Band, bis sie 1999 und 2000 Apple Venus Volume 1 und Wasp Star (Apple Venus Vol.2) veröffentlichen, was jedoch vorerst die letzte reguläre Veröffentlichung bleibt.
