Bandgeschichte
Antony wächst in Kalifornien auf und fühlt sich dort als Außenseiter, bis ihm Boy George auf dem Plattencover von Culture Clubs Kissing to Be Clever wie eine Offenbarung erscheint. 1990 zieht er nach New York, wo sein exzentrisches und sexuell uneindeutiges Auftreten weniger auffällt. Er gründet eine Kabarettgruppe und 2000 dann Antony and the Johnsons. Im selben Jahr erscheint das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum bei Durtro, dem Label von David Tibet von Current 93. Lou Reed wird auf die Platte aufmerksam und ist davon derart begeistert, dass er mit der Band Songs für zwei seiner Alben aufnimmt und mit ihr auf Tour geht.
Es folgt die 2004 veröffentlichte EP The Lake. Das zweite Album I Am a Bird Now wird 2005 schließlich zum internationalen Kritikererfolg. Und katapultiert die Formation am Ende des Jahres auf vordere Plätze der Jahrescharts zahlreicher einschlägiger Musikpublikationen.
2008 entsteht die Another World EP, deren Titelsong ebenfalls auf dem 2009 erscheinenden Studioalbum The Crying Light zu finden ist. Dieses wird von der Kritik gefeiert. Schon ein Jahr später erscheint der Nachfolger Swanlights, dem einer Special Edition ein 144-seitiges Buch beiliegt.
